Building on the success of its six completed industrial development projects in North Brooklyn, GMDC has completed its seventh project in the manufacturing neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. In November 2012, GMDC acquired a former auto parts warehouse facility at 1102 Atlantic Avenue, and in 2015 completed its renovation into a multi‐tenanted manufacturing center which was awarded LEED Silver certification.
The $15 million development project included renovation of this two-story industrial property to create production space for small and mid-sized manufacturers. As is consistent with GMDC’s mission, these units are marketed specifically to businesses that seek the locational and market advantages of New York City.
The project addresses New York City’s growing emphasis on providing living wage employment opportunities to low‐income New Yorkers. The finished building now houses 11 small and mid-sized manufacturing businesses providing 45 new or retained jobs for workers making an average of $47,000 per year. This is well above living wage standards and higher than average for the retail sector in New York.
